I was driving home tonight, shifting gears, when the ring I got at Crafty Feast a couple of weeks ago slipped and dug into my index finger.
For an instant, as I caught a pointed edge and turned it back around, my mind flashed on a ring I had growing up.
It was silver, fashioned in the shape of the symbol for Taurus. I thought it was a funny-shaped fish. I remember my aunt, Linda, gave it to me.
I remember that ring was really important to me. I don't know why. It was mine? It was from my aunt? I was a kid and didn't have many pretty things?
It reminded me of a quote I pulled during my speech research. It's from Thomas Paine: "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.
"Tis dearness only that gives everything its value."
I like the $30 ring I got last month. It's not nearly as special as that gift from 30-plus years ago.
